Braintree

Braintree has a population of approximately 37,000. It is almost equidistant of
Colchester and Chelmsford, and is situated 55 miles north-east of London.

Natural boundaries exist in the form of Pods Brook / River Brain in the west and
the River Pant / Blackwater in the north. Modern Braintree is built on the crossroads of two Roman roads, the B1053 (London Road) and the B1256 (Rayne Road).
Braintree's oldest buildings, and the Market Square, are close to this. The Market was granted a Royal Charter in 1199. Braintree was also home to the factory that produced the Silks and Tapestries for the refurbishment of Windsor Castle after the fire of 1992.

Braintree has developed into an important centre for the surrounding district and is well supplied by several Supermarkets as well as smaller, more traditional stores. The Freeport retail park on the outskirts of the town has been of benefit to the town's prosperity.

It has several primary and secondary schools, as well as a College, and will soon have a Sixth Form based at Notley High School.

The dual carriageway A120 means Stansted Airport is approximately 20 minutes away, and London is easily accessible via the M11. Alternatively, Braintree's railway station provides trains direct to London Liverpool Street station.
